1960
The female birth control contraceptive, the pill, was released.
The Motown Record Corporation was founded.
1961
The Berlin Wall was constructed to prevent East Berliners from defecting to the West.
1962
The first computer video game, Spacewar!, was invented.
The audio cassette was invented.
1963
Touch-Tone telephones were introduced.
On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated as he travelled
in an open top car in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas, USA.
1964
Nelson Mandela was convicted of treason and sentenced to life in prison.
1965
On January 24, 1965, Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill,
who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945
and again from 1951 to 1955,
died, at the age of 90.
1966
The first heart transplantation operation was undertaken.
On 30th July, 1966, England defeated West Germany 4-2 after extra time,
to win the FIFA World Cup.
1967
The first ATM is opened in Barclays Bank, London.
On 1st July, 1967, BBC2’s scheduled, but limited, colour service began in Britain.
1968
On 4th April, 1968, the American black civil rights leader, Dr Martin Luther King,
was assassinated in the southern US city of Memphis, Tennessee,
1969
The Anglo-French airliner Concorde makes its first supersonic test flight.
On July 20, 1969, Commander Neil Armstrong became the first man on the moon.
He said the historic words, "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
